Life Insurance
So you can live with peace of mind.
Financial Planning is about more than just saving money for retirement and reducing debt. A sound financial plan should also safeguard against potentially devastating events that may take you and your family by surprise. In other words, your plan needs to include risk management. One important aspect of risk management is life insurance.
Perhaps the most common purpose of life insurance is to protect one's spouse and children. Life insurance creates an instant estate so families can move forward after the death of a spouse to raise, clothe and educate the family. Traditionally, only the main breadwinner(s) of a family would have life insurance. In reality, even if there is a traditional 'stay at home' spouse, it is wise to insure both so that the working spouse has funds to pay for domestic services such as childcare, taxes and house-cleaning.
The settlement from a life insurance policy serves a number of other purposes, as well. The settlement can pay debts, particularly the mortgage, so that the surviving spouse is not burdened with the monthly payments that both spouses once shared. The settlement can also pay estate expenses such as probate and legal fees, any tax liability on death, and the funeral. Alternatively, the settlement can be used to make a large charitable donation or to create a more equitable distribution of your estate; for example, if you intended leaving a $150,000 cottage to one child you could, using insurance, leave other family members an equivalent amount.
Life insurance policies can also protect businesses. If you own a business with someone else, for example, insurance can allow your business-partner to buy your company shares from your spouse who would, on your death, own the shares.
Issues such as what type of insurance you need, how much and with which company can all be discussed with a MemberCARE® Representative. Call for an appointment today.
