Prairie Pride Credit Union Newsletter - Summer 2002

Consumer Safety -
Tips for Debit Card Use:

1. Your debit card is the key to your account(s). You should never lend your card to anyone, including friends and family.

2. Do not carry your PIN in written form, unless the written PIN is not carried next to the debit card and is thoroughly disguised.

3. When selecting your PIN, you should always avoid the obvious and never use your address, telephone number, date of birth, or social insurance number.

4. You should never let your debit card out of sight when conducting a transaction.

5. You should always conduct transactions with your debit card when and where you feel most secure.

6. When conducting a transaction, you should use your hand or body to shield your PIN.

7. After completing a transaction, you should remember to take your banking card and, if provided, your transaction record.

8. If your banking card is lost, stolen or retained by an Automated Teller Machine (ATM), you should notify your financial institution immediately.

9. No one from our credit union will ever request that a member provide him or her with their PIN.

10. You should remember that your safety comes first. You should report any theft incident to the police and your Financial Institution.

DEBIT CARDS FACTS:
According to the Interac Association, more than 34 million debit cards are in circulation among an adult population of 21.8 million. Canadians use their debit cards more and 2.2 billion times in 2001. That's an average of 71 times a second for every hour of every day.

In 2001, consumer-tracking research conducted by the Interac Association indicated that, for the first time ever, INTERAC Direct Payment (IDP) has surpassed cash as Canadian's preferred way to pay.
