Stop. Breathe. Verify.

Fraud is constantly evolving, and staying informed is one of the best ways to protect yourself. At Prairie Pride Credit Union, your security is a top priority. By learning how fraud works and knowing what to watch for, you can reduce your risk and act quickly if something doesn’t seem right.

Fraudsters use many methods to target personal and financial information. Some of the most common include:

Phishing & Scam Messages

Fraudulent emails, texts, or phone calls that appear to be from a trusted organization. These messages often create urgency and ask you to click a link, share personal information, or send money.

Impersonation Scams

Scammers may pretend to be a financial institution, government agency, utility company, or even a family member to gain your trust.

Online & Shopping Fraud

Fake websites, social‑media ads, or online sellers offering deals that seem too good to be true. These scams often result in payment sent with no goods received.

Card & Account Fraud

Unauthorized transactions on your debit or credit card or suspicious activity on your account due to stolen card details or compromised credentials.

Red Flags to Watch For

Be cautious if you encounter any of the following:

  • Requests for personal or financial information by email, text, or phone
  • Messages that create pressure, urgency, or fear
  • Unexpected prizes, refunds, or investment opportunities
  • Requests for payment by gift cards, e‑transfers, or cryptocurrency
  • Poor spelling, generic greetings, or unfamiliar sender addresses

If something feels off, trust your instincts.

FRAUD

How can you protect yourself?

What Is Fraud?

Fraud is any act of deception used to gain money, personal information, or access to your accounts without your permission. Fraudsters may pretend to be trusted organizations, businesses, or individuals in order to trick you into sharing sensitive information or sending money.

Fraud can happen to anyone, and it often occurs through everyday communication channels like phone calls, emails, text messages, social media, or websites.

How Fraud Happens

Fraudsters use a variety of techniques to exploit trust and urgency. Common methods include:

  • Pretending to be a financial institution, government agency, or well‑known company
  • Creating urgent situations that pressure you to act quickly
  • Asking for personal details such as passwords, PINs, or one‑time verification codes
  • Requesting payment through unusual methods such as gift cards or e‑transfers
  • Offering deals, prizes, or investment opportunities that seem too good to be true

Their goal is to get you to act before you have time to question the request.

Types of Information Fraudsters Target

Fraudsters may try to obtain:

  • Online banking usernames and passwords
  • Debit or credit card numbers
  • PINs and verification codes
  • Social Insurance Numbers
  • Personal details such as your address, date of birth, or answers to security questions

Once this information is compromised, it can be used to access accounts or commit identity theft.

Why Awareness Matters

Understanding what fraud looks like is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself. Being informed helps you recognize warning signs, pause before responding, and avoid costly mistakes.

Fraud is constantly changing but awareness is your best defence.

Remember

Prairie Pride Credit Union will never ask you to share your PIN, full password, or one‑time verification codes by email, text, or phone.

If something doesn’t seem right, trust your instincts and contact us directly using trusted contact information.
